Future Statesman Program
Future Statesman Program is open to students ages 12-17 whose parents have pre-registered in Track I or II. Students will learn answers to questions such as these: So exactly what is a republic? What rights and responsibilities do we as citizens have under a republic? Is there such a thing as a separation of church and state? Participants in this year’s Future Statesman Program will learn about government, civics, and history. Credit hours may be given in government/civics for the time spent in completing the unit study and participating in the program itself. Prior to Capitol Day pre-registered students will complete a 20-page unit study. Upon its completion and participation in the activities planned at Capitol Day, t-shirts and certificates of participation will be awarded.
Check-in begins at 8:15 a.m. Program runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Registration fee: $8. The program is limited to the first 75 students. Pre-registration is only available upon parental registration in Track I or Track II.
The check-in tables will be located in the east hallway on the first floor rotunda in conjunction with the parent’s registration tables.
We will be starting promptly at 9:00 in Chesapeake Event Center at the Oklahoma History Center. We are on a very tight schedule, so please make sure your student is there on time. Parent volunteers will be leading groups to the History Center upon arrival.
We will not be serving lunch, so your student will need to bring a simple snack and drink to be eaten at the OHC.
Please remind your students to dress business-like. We want to keep the image of homeschooling on a proper level. In that respect, we will also want to always use the stairs rather than the elevators as a courtesy to the capitol staff.
The students will return to the first floor rotunda when the program is over at 1:00 p.m. We will have tables available at which your student may wait until you arrive to pick him/her up. We will not allow students to leave unsupervised. Please make arrangements to meet your student promptly at 1:00 p.m.
The following is a tentative schedule of the day’s events:
8:15 - Check in on first floor rotunda
9:00 – Historical Re-enactor
10:00 – Symposium
10:30 – Break and snacks
11:00 – Congressional Hearing
1:00 - Meet parents back on first floor rotunda
Volunteer to be a parent helper or ask questions by e-mailing Cindy Nicolai at futurestatesman@ochec.com.
